The Woodland Park Zoo, Washington is one of the most popular US tourist attractions. Woodland Park Zoo is located in the Green Lake neighborhood of Seattle in Washington. The Woodland Park Zoo, Washington was opened in 1899. The zoo is located south-west of the Green Lake and remains open daily from 9:30 am until 4 pm from October 1 through April 30, and 6 pm May 1 through September 30.
The Woodland Park Zoo covers 65 acres of exhibits and public spaces. The collection at the zoo includes:
- 1,144 animal specimens
- 290 animal species
- 22 arthropod colonies
- 7,000 trees
- 50,000 shrubs and herbs
- 1,000 plant species
Woodland Park Zoo has won more Best National Exhibit awards from the Association of Zoos & Aquariums than any other zoological institutions, except the Bronx Zoo in New York. The Woodland Park Zoo has created what is generally considered the world’s first immersion exhibit, a gorilla habitat, which was opened in the late 1970s.
A “Zoomazium”, combination of zoo and gymnasium was opened in May 2006 and includes an interactive play space for children. The play space includes nature-themed play areas as well as a Nature Exchange desk and open areas for various interactive programs.
Woodland Park Zoo also features a “green roof”, with a full-scale garden of native plants growing on the top of the building. The zoo also includes chrysalises, butterflies and blooms exhibits.
Tropical Rain Forest exhibit won a Best Exhibit award when it was opened in 1992. The Tropical Asia includes the Elephant Forest that won a national exhibit award when it opened in 1990. It features full-depth swimming pool for 3 female elephants, 2 Asian and 1 African.
